Bixolon XD3-40d: Desktop Label Printer with Three Interfaces

The Bixolon XD3-40d prints labels using direct thermal technology – without a ribbon, directly onto heat-sensitive material. At 203 dpi, the resolution is sufficient for barcodes, shipping labels, and product stickers. Anyone looking for a compact device with Bluetooth will find what they need with a Zebra label printer with Bluetooth. What sets this printer apart from comparable desktop models is that it comes with USB, RS232, and Ethernet simultaneously. You can connect it to a single workstation or integrate it into a network without having to purchase a different model.

Print Width and Speed: When Is the XD3-40d the Right Fit?

The XD3-40d prints labels up to 104 mm wide, with a maximum media width of 118 mm. This covers common shipping and warehouse labels. The print speed reaches a maximum of 127 mm per second – sufficient for medium print volumes, but not suited for production environments with very high throughput. Anyone who needs higher speed and Wi-Fi will find a suitable alternative with a Zebra label printer with Wi-Fi. Rolls up to 127 mm in outer diameter fit into the device, which easily accommodates standard label rolls. Anyone who needs to print larger labels exceeding 104 mm in width will require a model with a greater print width.

EPL, ZPLII, and SLCS: Which POS Software and Systems Are Compatible?

The XD3-40d supports three printer languages: EPL, ZPLII, and SLCS. EPL and ZPLII are widely established standards in label printing. Many inventory management systems and label software packages communicate via ZPLII without requiring a dedicated Bixolon driver. SLCS extends compatibility even further. Anyone who needs the same emulation languages in a thermal transfer model with Ethernet can consider a Zebra label printer with Ethernet. The black mark sensor reads black markings on the back of the liner material. Both together enable precise positioning – regardless of the media type you use. With 64 MB RAM and 128 MB flash memory, the printer handles even more complex label templates smoothly.

Interfaces: USB, RS232, and Ethernet Compared

USB Type B is suitable for direct connection to a single PC or POS system. RS232 with a 9-pin connector links the XD3-40d to older systems that still use serial interfaces. Ethernet makes the printer network-capable: multiple workstations can access it simultaneously without the need for an intermediate print server. Anyone who only connects a single workstation and has no plans for network operation is paying for interfaces they won't use – in that case, a model without Ethernet is a better fit. The XD3-40d is aimed at anyone looking for a zuverlässig label printer with versatile interface options. The package includes a USB cable, a power adapter, and a power cord, so you can get started right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bixolon XD3-40d work with common label software without a dedicated driver?

Yes, in many cases. ZPLII is a widely used industry standard that numerous label software packages and inventory management systems support natively. You can often set up the XD3-40d as a generic ZPLII printer without installing Bixolon's own software.

Can the printer be used by multiple PCs simultaneously via Ethernet?

Yes, via Ethernet it can be integrated into the local network and used from multiple workstations. Separate print server hardware is not required for this.

Which label types does the XD3-40d reliably detect?

The printer features both a gap sensor and a black mark sensor. Gap labels with liner gaps, as well as fanfold or roll-mounted media with black back-side markings, are detected – you are not limited to a single media type.

Can the XD3-40d also print graphics and logos on labels?

Graphics and simple logos are possible at 203 dpi. For very fine image details or high-resolution photos on labels, 203 dpi is not sufficient – a printer with 300 dpi or more is needed for that.

What roll sizes fit in the Bixolon XD3-40d?

Rolls with an outer diameter of up to 127 mm and a media width of up to 118 mm fit in the device. Standard label rolls in 80 mm or 100 mm widths are therefore well within the supported range.
